The Center for American Women and Politics celebrated its 50th anniversary earlier this month with a reception hosted by the Embassy of Canada in Washington, D.C. The event brought together officeholders past and present, scholars, journalists, students, activists, advocacy organizations, and CAWP scholars and staff from throughout the past five decades — all united by a common mission to expand women’s political representation and influence in the United States. In her remarks, CAWP Director Debbie Walsh told the crowd, “We are living in a remade world. When we were founded, there were just 15 women in Congress. Today, 150...The people in this room, your organizations and your predecessors, have done the work to make this possible."
U.S. Representatives Bonnie Watson Coleman and Mikie Sherrill, the two women members of New Jersey’s congressional delegation and honorary co-chairs of the event, also spoke at the reception and presented the Center with a proclamation from the United States House of Representatives.
