Eagleton Institute of Politics
On the Passing of Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver

A statement from Eagleton Institute Director John J. Farmer, Jr. on the passing of New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver:

“With Sheila Oliver’s passing, New Jersey has lost a true and dedicated public servant and Rutgers has lost a great friend and champion. At a critical time in this university’s history, when Rutgers’ very existence was threatened, Speaker Oliver refused to post the bill that would have dissolved our Board of Trustees. She did so at great political cost because it was simply the right thing to do. Her act of political courage should never be forgotten and her name should be honored by everyone who loves this university. She will be missed”

Gaining new skills at New Leadership® New Jersey

Earlier this summer, the Center for American Women and Politics welcomed the 2023 Susan N. Wilson NEW Leadership® (NEWL) New Jersey class to a six-day residential program on the Rutgers University–New Brunswick campus. Students from colleges and universities from around the state learned from scholars, activists, political practitioners, and officeholders about how to prepare for a life in politics and deepen their civic engagement. NEWL 2023 students took workshops about leadership, networking, working on political campaigns, diversity and identity in political action, careers in government, and more. They also completed an Action Project examining both sides of the hotly debated bill to expand liquor licensing in New Jersey.

Wisconsin governor employs partial veto to fund schools for 4 centuries

ABC News interviewed Kristoffer Shields, program manager of the Eagleton Center on the American Governor, on the power of the Governor of Wisconsin.

I think it'll be a really interesting conversation, moving forward, to see how comfortable people are with the executive being able to make a decision like that," Shields said. "I'm really curious to see if this turns into a movement to restrict the power in Wisconsin, or if this blows over."

Nikki Haley vs. 'President Harris'

Politico spoke with CAWP Director of Research Kelly Dittmar about women running against one another for their respective 2024 presidential campaigns.

“We’re just not used to seeing women who are very different but share the same demographic identities running against each other,” Dittmar says. “Nikki Haley is just using the same strategy that all the white guys have used.”

NCSL Grants Will Help States Launch Nonpartisan Science Policy Fellowships

The National Conference of State Legislatures named the Eagleton Science and Politics Fellowship as a model fellowship program for states interested in creating their own programs.

Advisory group member and New Jersey Sen. Andrew Zwicker says fellows in Rutgers University’s Eagleton Science and Politics Fellowship Program work alongside staff in legislative and executive branch offices, bringing valuable science and research skills to all policy issues, not just the scientific ones.“I don’t like to pigeonhole fellows only in science and tech work,” Zwicker, a physicist, says. “As scientists, they take a hard problem and break it down into small parts—and this is a helpful foundation for any policy proposal.”
