Applications are open for the Class of 2025-2026 Eagleton Graduate Fellowship Program. Apply today to gain a deeper understanding of American government, meet political leaders and staffers doing the work in public policy, and explore how American politics impacts your field of study.

All Rutgers graduate students are eligible to apply for this one-year, interdisciplinary cohort certificate program. Stipends and tuition support are available.

The deadline to apply is Monday, March 31, 2025, at 5:00PM.

Call for Applications for the Ruth B. Mandel Dissertation Research Awards

The Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) is calling for applications for the 2025 Ruth B. Mandel Dissertation Research Awards. Established in honor of CAWP co-founder and director Ruth B. Mandel, and made possible thanks to the generosity of Ruth's family, these awards support dissertation research on women, gender, and U.S. politics.

In this “part-two” conversation with Rutgers faculty about teaching during this challenging moment, Dr. Matto will share strategies for facilitating productive and respectful classroom discourse from her “Talking Across Difference” initiative.

RU Running Political Campaign Training

Join the Center for Youth Political Participation for an interactive political campaign workshop for young adults interested in running for office. The workshop includes breakout sessions hosted by New Jersey-based campaign experts on the topics of fundraising, campaign communications, and creating a successful campaign strategy. The event will be followed by a networking reception with young elected leaders and representatives of various political campaigns. 

Open to current Rutgers University undergraduate or graduate students only. Advanced registration required.

CAWP's Ready to Run® New Jersey

The future of our democracy depends on diverse voices at every level of leadership. Make yours one of them. CAWP's Ready to Run® campaign training program for women has trained more than 5,000 women to run for office, seek appointed positions, and work on or manage campaigns. The program includes three pre-conference sessions for Asian American women, Black women, and Latinas. Register for Ready to Run® New Jersey to start your political journey.

Registration fee is $175 through February 14th, or $225 after February 14th. Fee includes meals and all conference materials.

Author Discussion - John Lewis: A Life

Join Rutgers Professor of History and of Journalism & Media Studies, David Greenberg, for an engaging evening discussion about his latest publication, John Lewis: A Life, a compelling biography that explores the life and legacy of the civil rights icon. Before the talk, enjoy a light reception where you can mingle with fellow attendees. Books will be available for purchase and to be signed by Professor Greenberg. All are welcome to attend.

NJ Assembly Speaker Coughlin Shares Firsthand Insights with 2025 UA Cohort

On Tuesday, Speaker Craig Coughlin visited the Undergraduate Associate (UA) cohort "Processes of Politics" class taught by Eagleton's Director of Education and Strategic Initiatives, Ginger Gold Schnitzer. He explained how he navigates the legislative process, balances competing interests, and makes decisions that shape state policy. Emphasizing the role of political parties in governing, he provided insight into the complexities of leadership in the legislature. He also shared his personal journey into public service, including what inspired him to run for office and how he built his path to election. Students left with a deeper understanding of state government and the challenges of guiding the legislative process.

Phil Murphy is nearing the end of his two-term limit so New Jersey will elect a new governor this year. And the race got real for many voters this week, as primary debates kicked off among Democratic and Republican candidates. The primary is scheduled for June 10th, with early voting starting on June 6th.

Kristoffer Shields is Director of the Eagleton Center on the American Governor at Rutgers University. Speaking with Weekend Edition host David Furst, he helps us get a handle on the race - and a mountain of candidates.

“Equal representation is a non-partisan issue, but it has become a partisan problem,” Debbie Walsh, the director of the Center for American Women in Politics, wrote in a report assessing women’s representation in Congress this year. “To achieve gender parity in elected offices at every level, both parties must do the necessary, intentional work to recruit, support, and elect women.”
