CAWP's Women of Power Networking Event Hosts Governor Sherrill

This week, the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) hosted its annual Women of Power event, an evening of meaningful networking while supporting CAWP’s programs. Governor Mikie Sherrill, New Jersey’s second woman governor and the first Democratic woman governor, joined the event and shared words of encouragement, urging attendees to remain engaged in our democracy. “Once you open the doors [to women], it’s hard to shut them,” said Governor Sherrill.

Congratulations Eagleton Alumni Announced as Fulbright Recipients

Congratulations to our Eagleton alumni, Victoria Richard ('25 UA) and Christopher Slipiec ('25 UA), as well as the other Rutgers students selected as Fulbright grant recipients for this year. The Fulbright Program is an international academic exchange program founded in 1946 to increase mutual understanding and support friendly and peaceful relations between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Victoria will spend her Fulbright year in Spain and Christopher in Poland.

The Center for American Women and Politics is now accepting applications for the Susan N. Wilson NEW Leadership® New Jersey program, held on June 5-9, 2026. The five-day residential summer institute at Rutgers–New Brunswick educates undergraduate students about women's public leadership, introduces them to successful women leaders, and provides them with the tools to become more involved in the political process. The program includes a day at the State House in Trenton, meeting public officials and learning about state government.

New Jersey Monitor | Outside groups pour millions into NJ special election

“Any special election is going to be such a tiny portion of the voting public, typically those high-propensity voters that turn out for every election and those who are most civically engaged,” said Ashley Koning, director of the Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling at Rutgers University. “But this is a seat that Democrats can’t afford to lose in the House, that’s not only consequential for New Jersey but that the party at large will want to hold on to going into 2026. I think that’s why we see so much money pouring into this race.”

The 19th | Meet the Hell Cats — a key to Democrats’ hopes of taking the House

Debbie Walsh, the director of the Center for American Women and Politics, said that for a long time being a veteran was a boost for candidates.

“It’s only recently since we’ve had women who have served in combat in the military that they can now talk about that kind of service as candidates and that same commitment to country that men have been able to use forever,” Walsh said.
