Initiative at Rutgers Eagleton Institute of Politics will seek to transform today’s political culture

Rutgers University leaders today announced a long-term initiative to support civic education and create broad civic engagement opportunities with a strong emphasis on student involvement and solution-focused dialogue. The new Rutgers Democracy Lab at the Eagleton Institute of Politics will aim to promote a civic-minded community informed by research and analysis of citizenship, political participation and civil discourse.

Rutgers University leaders announced the long-term initiative to support civic education and create broad civic engagement opportunities, with a strong emphasis on student involvement and solution-focused dialogue. 

Don't miss the 2024 New Jersey History Conference on December 3, 2024, at the Douglass Student Center. Learn how New Jerseyans navigated political tensions throughout history, what we can do to support a stronger democracy today, and more.

The event will begin with a welcome and opening remarks from Governor Phil Murphy. Following, keynote speaker and Eagleton's Director, Dr. Elizabeth C. Matto will share how all of us can become more engaged in the democratic process.

After the keynote, panel sessions will share new research on the history of:

• Civic participation in New Jersey's AAPI communities
• Student-led activism
• 19th century African American journalists and activists
• Women's participation in New Jersey politics
• Environmental protection legislation
• Power, ethics, and politics
• The legacy of the American Revolution in the 20th century

There will also be a panel on how to publish in New Jersey and a series of 5-minute lightning session presentations.

Regular tickets are on sale now for $75. Student tickets are available for $5 with a valid student I.D. 

Tickets include entrance to the conference as well as a continental breakfast and a buffet lunch from 1911 Smoke House.

Rutgers University is launching a “Democracy Lab” to promote civil discourse and political participation, school officials announced Friday.

The lab, based at the Eagleton Institute of Politics in New Brunswick, is designed to help students recognize disinformation, engage effectively with people who hold different views, and tackle the challenges facing American democracy.

The 2024 election will mark the first since 2016 that women did not see a net gain in congressional representation. No more than 151 women will serve in January 2025, the same that served on Election Day 2024, according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University. When women remain so vastly underrepresented – holding just 28% of all congressional seats, stasis elections like this one postpone the progress necessary to achieve gender parity in political officeholding.
